Green Globe congratulates Mövenpick Resort Hurghada on its recent re-certification in recognition of its dedication to sustainable best practices.
Islam Mohamed, Recreation & Watersports Manager at Mövenpick Resort Hurghada said, “Mövenpick Resort Hurghada is actively involved in charitable and sustainable projects. It works in close cooperation with local and global partners to promote sustainability in the social sphere. The resort focuses on raising its employees awareness of key topics in the area of environment protection as well as supporting voluntary activities and the work of recognized organizations.”
This year the resort was honored by the Red Sea Governor for its active participation in hosting the International Labor Organization Conference (ILO) for the past two years. The ILO supports integrated projects for the rehabilitation and employment of people with disabilities in the tourism sector in the Red Sea. Another community initiative supported by the resort is its annual National Orphan’s Day. Hotel staff volunteer their time to spend the day and play games with young children at the rural village of Makadi Bay. And the resort provides food for the festivities as part of its food donation program.
The resort adheres to a comprehensive Sustainability Management Plan. Energy, water and waste usage are monitored on a continual basis and reduction targets specified. Energy saving lamps are utilized in landscaped areas and outdoor lights are controlled by photocells. And energy efficient lighting is being gradually introduced in guest rooms. The resort has also installed new energy saving laundry equipment, boilers and chillers.
To conserve water, low flow taps and showerheads are installed in guest rooms as well as public facilities including the health club, staff facilities and public toilets. While knee operated taps have been fitted in all kitchen sections. The resort is planning to extend water saving measurements throughout the property during upcoming renovations. Furthermore, to minimize water usage in gardens, drought resistant plant species such as cactus and bougainvillea are used.
Mövenpick Resort Hurghada works with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) to reduce its impact on the surrounding Red Sea eco-system. HEPCA handles the recycling and reuse of materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, glass bottles and aluminium cans. In addition, eco-friendly cleaning products and dishwashing detergents are preferred at the property.
