June 2, 2017 Arton Kabashi

Negril, Jamaica – Thursday, June 1 – Rockhouse Hotel located in Negril’s Pristine Cove staged its ninth annual Green Challenge Quiz today at the Negril Branch Library. The Green Challenge Quiz, which aims to boost environmental awareness and conservational practices for students at the primary school level, has become an annual highlight in the calendar year. This year’s eight competing schools include Little Bay All Age, Sheffield Primary, Negril All Age, Mount Airy, Little London Primary, Moreland Hill Primary, Broughton Primary and Revival All Age.

Each school was represented by a team of four competitors between the ages of 9-12 years old, as well as their teachers and classmates who came out Thursday morning to cheer them on.

Mount Airy triumphantly took first place, winning the honor of having their name embellished on the coveted Green Challenge Trophy, which will be prominently displayed at the Negril Branch Library, as well as J$15,000 towards their school fund and a trip to Kool Running’s Water Park. Revival All Age took the second-place trophy, J$10,000 towards their school fund, and a trip to the amazing Dolphin Cove. Little Bay All Age came in third place, winning J$5,000 for their school fund along with a trip to Jamwest Adventure Park. In addition to the quiz, students were invited to participate in a recycled art competition calling for artworks to be made entirely with salvaged materials. The winning school, Little London Primary, was awarded J$5,000 cash for the most outstanding and imaginative creation.

Dennis Eckart, environmentalist and artist behind ‘Eco Pots’, a project that transforms discarded motor vehicle tires into sculptural artworks to beautify inner-city community spaces, came out in usual support of the event. Eckart also displayed his innovative ‘Tire Birds’ series of hummingbirds and flower pots at the Negril Branch Library, along with a colourful booth for the students to paint their own tire birds.

Negril Environmental Education Trust (NEET) was also onsite showcasing environmental educational material and book giveaways.

About The Rockhouse Foundation
The Rockhouse Foundation was founded in 2003 by The Rockhouse Hotel and its owners to transform the places where Jamaica’s children learn and support the great people who teach them. Since its inception, the Foundation has expended over US$3.5 million in renovating, expanding and modernizing five early childhood and primary schools, as well as the Negril Community Library. The Foundation’s current project – its most ambitious to date – is the construction of the region’s first Special Needs Early Childhood School in Savanna La Mar. To ensure that its contributions to education are meaningful and long-lasting, the Foundation supplements its building projects with ongoing facility maintenance and on-site support. Additionally, the Rockhouse Hotel and its owners underwrite all of the Foundation’s administrative expenses so that every cent of every donation goes directly to its projects and programs, impacting the lives of thousands of young people and their families.
